I have lived most of my life within sight of the South Downs and have a deep affection for the Sussex landscape which I hope to share through my paintings. Working mainly in soft pastels, I apply many layers in order to capture the light and colour of the countryside, creating a vibrant surface to the finished work.
My background is in biological sciences and in farming – livestock and wildlife are also irresistible subjects for painting – but I have always found time for art in one form or another. I have exhibited at a large number of group and open exhibitions and in several Sussex galleries, and am an elected member of the Association of Sussex Artists. On retirement from 25 years working in Brighton’s hospitals, I started the Chailey & Newick Painting Group of which I am chairman and which, I’m delighted to say, has gone from strength to strength.
